Fair Gems is the first international process to guarantee traceability for precious stones.
The Fair Gems industry brings together all those involved in producing precious stones, from their extraction to their sale to consumers. It covers every phase of transformation and distribution, for 100% traceable stones. The Fair Gems Process also works through non-profit associations to support the families of miners and train young people in the precious stone trades. The Fair Gems Process was created in 2003 by Marc Dole and a group of other international experts on precious stones involved in the fight for "clean gemstones." Their efforts have included several reports denouncing harmful practices in the precious stone industry. To this end, they have created the Fair Gems Process to guarantee to end consumers that every member of the industry has respected a strict set of specifications. The Fair Gems Process not only guarantees the quality of precious stones, but also ensures that production follows the principles of sustainable development. The quality of the process is audited by an independent entity.
Sri Lanka: the first country to adopt the Fair Gems Process
Over the past 5 years, the Fair Gems Process has been perfected in Sri Lanka. It is only natural that Sri Lanka, with the support of its government, should become the first country to adopt the Fair Gems Process. The ultimate goal is to roll out this initiative to all countries that produce and distribute precious stones. In late 2011, the Fair Gems Process will take the next step in Sri Lanka, from traceable stones to a fair trade industry.
The Fair Gems Process is managed and administered by a foundation under Swiss law: the Fair Gems Foundation.
